Lake Lanier History and Geography
- Completed in 1957 by the U.S.
Corps of Engineers.
- Covers 38,000 acres at normal
pool of 1071 feet above sea level.
- Shoreline is 540 miles long;
Corps line is 760 miles long.
- Located only 25 miles north of
the metro Atlanta area.
- Top of dam is 192 feet above
the river bed and 1085 feet above sea level.
- Purpose of the lake is
recreation, water supply, power generation, flood control and
downstream navigation.
- Formed by the Chestatee and the
Chattahoochee Rivers along with numerous creeks and streams.
